Background

During World War 2 Florida sykehus (hospital) was requisitioned by the German navy and named "Marine Lazarett Bergen". Barracks were built in the vicinity, and two were still standing in 1951. The building nearest the hospital, housed St. Paul's school from 1963 to 1991. The building was demolished when the new roads on Nygårdstangen were built in the 1990's, as can be seen in the photo from 2005.

On the 29 October 1944 Lancaster MkIII ND332
from RAAF 463 Squadron was shot down by anti-aircraft fire and crashed in Store Lungegårdsvannet, a lake next to the hospital, having dropped its bomb load over Nøstet just before crashing. Over the years the lake has been partly filled in. When new tunnels and roads were built in the 1990's, a search was made for the plane but nothing was found. A memorial plaque was set up (and visited by BH3 in 2008).
